SUMMARY OF TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Financial Support: The educational stipend for 2002-2003, based upon the level of postgraduate training, and subject to all applicable withholdings, is as follows:

Vacation: The ABA allows 20 days off per academic year. Any sick days will have to be made up with a Saturday call or vacation time. If a resident is sick for more than 20 days (ex. maternity leave) then the residency is extended until their training is complete.
Leave: Residents are entitled to medical, family, personal and educational leaves. A Leave of Absence may be granted for up to one year. Conditions, such as appropriate medical clearance, must be met before the Resident can return, and a deadline by which the Resident must request termination of the leave for a place to be held in the appropriate class will be set by the Residency Training Program Director at the time leave is granted. Credit toward completion of the Residency Training Program requirements, with respect to leave time shall be as follows: a) No credit for the Residency Training Program requirements will be given for any leave period in excess of that permitted by the specialty board; b) No credit will be given for any leave period in excess of four (4) weeks.
Professional Liability Insurance: The Resident shall be provided with professional liability insurance coverage for the duration of training. Such coverage shall provide legal defense and protection against awards from claims reported or filed after the completion of the residency Training Program if the alleged acts or omissions are within the scope of the Residency Training Program. Such insurance coverage does not extend to outside employment.
Medical and Disability Insurance: Medical and disability insurance benefits will be made available to the Resident in accordance with the medical and disability insurance employee benefits of NYU Hospitals Center or Bellevue Hospital Center depending on which institution has the Resident on its payroll at the time. The medical and disability insurance benefits are described in the new employee orientation materials of each hospital.
Living Quarters, Meals and Laundry: A limited number of apartments are available from NYU, those residents who cannot be accommodated will receive assistance in finding suitable housing off campus through the OCHAP (Off Campus Housing Assistance Program) Office located at 339 E. 28 th Street. Meal coupons are distributed to residents while on night call to be used in the hospital cafeteria at Tisch Hospital. Residents assigned to Bellevue are entitled to free meals at the Bellevue Hospital Center. Lab coats and scrubs are supplied and laundered by the hospitals.

Payroll/Union: Residents rotate between Bellevue and Tisch Hospital payrolls throughout the training period. Generally the payroll changes will occur no less often than six months. All residents on Bellevue payroll are required to join the union, CIR (Committee of Interns and Residents).
