NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine Fellowship is a one-year program, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) that trains physicians to employ regional anesthesiology techniques safely and efficiently. The program is offered through the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative Care, and Pain Medicine.

Under the guidance of David L. Furgiuele, MD, fellowship director, and Shakir McLean, MD, fellowship assistant director, our goal is to produce outstanding clinicians with superior technical skills, an up-to-date knowledge of the specialty, and the ability to become teachers and leaders in the field. The fellowship is based at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital. Our experts handle all types of adult and pediatric cases, allowing for a well-rounded training experience.

Fellowship Didactic Program

Clinical training primarily occurs at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, one of only two orthopedic hospitals in New York City and a leading center for the treatment of orthopedic conditions. Under the guidance of our diverse and dynamic staff, fellows gain proficiency in providing surgical anesthesia and postoperative analgesia for orthopedic procedures.

Fellows also rotate at our ambulatory orthopedic surgical center, where they learn to apply regional anesthesia in a day surgery setting. This includes training in how to combine peripheral nerve blockade for postoperative pain management with optimal anesthesia care.

The fellowship also includes rotations at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, which is on the same campus as the Kimmel Pavilion and Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital—34th Street, where fellows have the opportunity to apply regional anesthesiology in a spectrum of surgical specialties.

Training at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, allows fellows to use a variety of regional anesthesia techniques at a Level 1 Trauma Center.

Fellowship Didactic Training

Didactics include a weekly lecture series on important topics in regional anesthesia, as well as a continuing medical education–accredited Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative Care, and Pain Medicine Grand Rounds and Case Conference.

We also hold monthly journal clubs, and fellows have the opportunity to present and supervise resident presentations. The department is in charge of ultrasound-guided regional anesthesiology workshops at two major national meetings: the Postgraduate Assembly in Anesthesiology and the American Society of Anesthesiologists, where fellows have an opportunity to instruct.

Fellowship Teaching Opportunities

Fellows can supervise anesthesiology, perioperative care, and pain medicine residents in the operating room and teach medical students.

Fellowship Research Training

We strongly encourage involvement in research. Fellows have an opportunity to begin an original project under the supervision of a staff anesthesiologist or participate in an ongoing project. Examples of past projects include studies on the following topics:

• plasma concentrations of ropivacaine following femoral nerve blocks performed using ultrasound guidance or nerve stimulation
• the effect on rehabilitation parameters of the addition of an adductor canal block to local anesthetic infiltration by the surgeon following total knee arthroplasty
• the effect of the surgical result of a motor-sparing spinal anesthesia, allowing active testing of pressure balancing during total knee replacement
• the outcome of adding liposomal bupivacaine (Exparel) to bupivacaine for interscalene blocks for total shoulder arthroplasty on postoperative pain scores and hospital length of stay
• the influence of anesthetic management on the length of stay of total hip replacement patients scheduled for same-day discharge

We also recommend that fellows participate in academic endeavors, such as writing book chapters or creating poster presentations, and encourage attendance at one conference of their choice, including meetings of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, European Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Therapy, and American Society of Anesthesiologists.

Fellowship Application Process

We accept one fellow per year.

Starting in 2023, the program is participating in a match through SF Match. Applications are accepted starting in December each year for the following year’s program. Applications should be submitted by May 1. Candidates are expected to have completed an ACGME-accredited anesthesiology residency and to be board-certified or board-eligible.
